Previously served as Texas Attorney General from 2002 to 2015. Served on the Texas Supreme Court from 1996 to 2001. 
 
Endorsed in the 2022 general election by the editorial board of the Dallas Morning News. He also received their endorsement in the 2022 Republican primary election and in the 2018 election.  

Endorsed in the 2022 Republican primary election by the editorial board of the Houston Chronicle. The newspaper endorsed Abbott's opponent, Beto O'Rourke, in the 2022 general election, however.

Endorsed in the 2018 primary election by Texans for Fiscal Responsibility (Empower Texans), a group that has supported budget cuts and limiting state spending on public education, reducing educators' rights and benefits, and funding private school vouchers.
