First elected as Texas Attorney General in November 2014. His current term expires January 2027.
This race will not be on the ballot in 2024.
The Texas House
voted in May 2023 to impeach Paxton. The Senate conducted an impeachment trial in September 2023,
voting to acquit him of the charges.
Paxton has been under criminal indictment since 2015 on securities fraud charges.
Paxton previously served as a Texas State Senator from 2013-2015. He is married to Texas State Sen. Angela Paxton (R-McKinney).
Endorsed in the 2022 general election and Republican primary runoff election by the
Texas Home School Coalition, which supports using public funds for private and home-schools, giving private and home-schooled students greater access to public education services, and limiting state oversight of private and home schools.
In the 2022 general election, the editorial boards of the
Houston Chronicle, the
San Antonio Express-News, the
Austin American-Statesman, the
Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, and the
Dallas Morning News all endorsed Paxton's opponent, Rochelle Garza (D).
