Education Committees meet

Date Posted: 2/14/2013 | Author: Jennifer Mitchell, CAE
Both the House Public Education and Senate Education committees held hearings Feb. 12. The House committee meeting was largely organizational, and no bills were brought during the hearing. The committee did, however, hear from representatives from the Texas Education Agency and briefly discussed accountability and the implications of the latest school finance law suit. The Senate Education Committee took up two bills, Senate Bill (SB) 172 by Sen. John Corona (R–Dallas), which deals with reading comprehension for kindergarten students, and SB 3 by Committee Chairman Sen. Dan Patrick (R–Houston). SB 3 calls for amending curriculum and graduation requirements. ATPE did not take an official position on the bill, but ATPE Governmental Relations Director Brock Gregg did appear before the committee to share some concerns. You can view his testimony by clicking here. Brock’s testimony starts at the 2:04:00 mark.
